Exodus 15:1-27 – The Song of the Sea (Moses) and Bitter water sweetened
A. The Song of the Sea (vs 1-21)
The Song of the Sea (sometimes called Song of Moses) was composed to celebrate God’s victory over the Egyptians. Moses also wrote Psalm 90 and another Song of Moses (Deut 32:1-43). Psalm 90 is a song of God’s eternal majesty and a petition for His favor. Deuteronomy 32 is a song of remembrance and instruction. “The song of Moses and the song of the Lamb: will be sung by the Tribulation saints in the future (Revelation 15:3-5).
After leaving Egypt in haste, the Israelites were afraid of the pursuing Egyptians. At the Red Sea, they saw God’s great power and feared the LORD and believed in Him. Exodus 15:1-21 is a personal and national song of praise and celebration. “I will sing to the LORD, I will praise Him, and I will exalt Him” (vs 1-2). “Let us sing to the LORD” (vs 21).
Why? The LORD has triumphed gloriously over His enemies.
The LORD is one’s strength. song, and salvation. The LORD is to be feared and believed by all for His glorious attributes. There is no one like Him among the gods.
B. Bitter water sweetened (vs 22-27)
Three days after the Song of victory over the Egyptians, the thirsty Israelites finally found an oasis, but its waters were bitter (marah) and undrinkable. Moses obeyed the LORD and threw a log (tree) and the waters of Marah became good (mathaq). The LORD declares, “I am the LORD, your Healer (Rapha).”
