Whom Do We Rely On?

We sang this song during the second service.

The song takes the form of questions and answers – asking who we are worshiping, and upon whom we rely for how we live our lives.

  • Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?
  • Whose love is mighty and so much stronger?
  • Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder?
  • Who leaves us breathless in awe and wonder?
  • Who brings our chaos back into order?
  • Who makes the orphan a son and daughter?
  • Who rules the nations with truth and justice?

As I prepared for worship, I reflected on the lyrics. “Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?” Colossians 1:13 speaks of Christ delivering us from the depths of darkness and setting the stage for our new life in Him.

The song answers each of these questions the same way: the King of Glory, the King above all kings.

The world tells us to look to countless “GOATs” (Greatest of All Time) – in sports, at work, the star parent on social media who seems to have it all together, or the influencer or celebrity we wish we could be like.

But we have someone far greater to guide us and to aspire toward: the King above all kings.

Isn’t that wonderful? We don’t have to chase endlessly after the world’s approval, because we have redemption. We have kinship with the King above all kings.

Finally, the bridge of the song lifts us into a worshipful refrain: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain; worthy is the King who conquered the grave!” (Revelation 5:11–12).

For me, that felt like the perfect conclusion. After wrestling with the big questions, we rest in the promise of the King of Glory. And so, humbly, we offer our worship to the King of kings.
