Deacons (Greek: Diakonoi) are assistants or aides to the elders in a local church. (Elders, overseers and pastors are interchangeable terms.)
The Chief Shepherd has charged the elders with spiritual oversight responsibilities – to guide, guard, teach and shepherd the local church (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2-3).
Although deacons are not given the above charge directly, they are entrusted with delegated authority by the elders in their respective areas of service in Bethesda Chapel.
Qualifications for elders and deacons are stated in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13 respectively. Many of these character traits are also expected of every maturing believer.
In a general sense, every church member is blessed by the Holy Spirit to serve Christ in and outside the local church.
In time, some of these mature believers may be appointed to serve specifically as deacons in church. These believers will need to be properly qualified, examined and approved by the church (Bethesda Chapel Articles of Association).
Pray for our deacons and their families.
“For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13).
