As we come to the end of the lunar year of the Dragon and prepare to enter the year of the Snake, I was reminded that the Bible has a lot to say about dragons and snakes.
In Psalms, we read, “It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters” (Psalm 74:12 NIV). The word “monster” could also be translated as dragon or snake, depending on which Bible translation we use.
And in Revelation it says, “The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Rev 12:9 NIV).
Throughout the Bible we see this battle between God and Satan, but we are assured that at the end God will defeat Satan with His power and authority. And I believe God has given us the authority to crush the head of the snake, as He had told the serpent in the Garden of Eden about the offspring of Eve, “He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Gen 3:15b NIV). That has become true through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Through Jesus we have power and authority over the work of the Evil One.
I believe God wants to use every one of us this year to fight against the dragon (Satan). Through our prayers, the Word of God and practising the presence of God we can become more than conquerors. We can become “Dragon slayers” with Jesus!
May God use each of us to stand our ground, to fight against the attacks of Satan and his evil schemes, as we seek His presence and serve with His authority in 2025.
