The Passing of Pope Francis

The passing of Pope Francis earlier this week is a significant moment for the global Christian community, not only for Catholics.

Let us take a moment to reflect and respond with Christian love, respect, and discernment.

During his 12-year tenure as Pontiff, Pope Francis championed causes that resonated deeply with us in Singapore, regardless of denomination or belief:

1. Social justice and care for the less fortunate.
2. Environmental stewardship.
3. Interfaith and interdenominational dialogue rooted in mutual respect.

Pope Francis often called for unity and reconciliation among Christians. As members of the Body of Christ – and as Bethesda Chapel – what is our role in fostering this unity? How can we promote it without compromising truth? Are there any assumptions or prejudices we need to lay down?

Beyond the causes he supported, Pope Francis exemplified humility, mercy, and compassion. What aspects of his example might we emulate in our own Christian journey?

In times of loss, we are called to “mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15).

Let us pray for those grieving his passing, for all who were impacted by his life and legacy. Let us pray also for all interfaith and interdenominational dialogue to continually be built upon respect and understanding within all the communities in Singapore.

Note:
Pope Francis, in a long line of popes, is a human leader of the Roman Catholic church, appointed by the Roman Catholic authority. As such, his perspectives, legacy and work must be viewed accordingly. It is always important to remember that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, divine and God-sent, and Jesus Christ is “the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6).
