Paul, The Encourager

Our small group has been studying the Books of Acts. We recently reached Acts 20. In this chapter, Paul’s Third Missionary Journey gave us an unforgettable lesson: Paul was a great encourager to many of his fellow missionary partners, either in prayers or as travelling companions.

Acts 20:1-2 (ESV) “After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia. When he had gone through those regions and had given them much encouragement, he came to Greece”.

The word translated “encouragement” or “exhortation” is the Greek word paraklésis, which basically means “a call to one’s side.”.

We can be an encourager like Paul because of the love that God has shown to all of us. If we can appreciate the love of God, it will be easy for us to exude confidence and be an encourager to others. The body of Christ is built up in faith as a result of the ministry of those with the gift of encouragement.

Apostle Paul was a great encourager because he focused on the practical application of the Word. With God’s help, Paul was always helping others to move from pessimism to optimism, citing his sufferings throughout his missionary journeys.

Throughout Paul’s ministry, he demonstrated the gift of encouragement, calling others to his side in order to help, comfort, and encourage them to become more effective for Christ.

Are you willing to step up and step out to experience the gift of being an encourager just like Paul? May the Lord help us with the blessing of the Holy Spirit to bring out the many gifts that He has endowed upon us.
