Oh, Mother! Reflections on the Trinity

A mother’s love reflects the love of the Trinity. Being able to comprehend the love of a mother for her children helps us to better understand the mysterious love of the Holy Trinity.

What images come to mind when we see a mother holding her child? I recall the love I felt when I first held my child, and the joy we may feel seeing a mother holding her newborn. And if the child could speak, he or she might say ‘Oh, the love and warmth of a family!’

Through a candid moment of family love, the Lord invites us once again deeper into the mystery of His love – the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus was baptised, the Father said, ‘This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased’ (Matt 3:17 ESV). The baptism of Jesus is a powerful visual representation of the Trinity, showing the distinct yet unified roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

All three were present at the baptism. The Son was baptised by John, and the Father spoke about His Son and the Spirit came upon the Son. I thought it is a beautiful picture of the Trinity fully revealed.

Recently, we saw five persons being baptised, and we saw traces of the Trinity in the baptism. As we witnessed each one being baptised, our hearts were filled with joy. As they were immersed into the water, family and friends rejoiced that they have publicly declared that they belong to Christ, and it reminds us of the Trinitarian love of God.

As the church celebrates and welcomes them into God’s family, it is like the love of a mother and the love of a family.

Blessed Mother’s Day!
