A Cool Drink Of Water

A lady from China once told me that she missed the taste of water from home. In her village, they drank from wells. She said that it was so sweet and that there was nothing like the taste of that well water. As a city-dweller, the idea of drinking naturally occurring, untreated water seemed unsanitary.

It got me thinking. Well water, like spring water, comes from deep in the ground. It is perfectly filtered by the layers of the earth and ready for drinking. I have yet to taste either well or spring water, but it’s often described as tasting clean, crisp and refreshing – and in the case of my friend from China – superior.

John 4 records what Jesus famously said to a Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus had been travelling in the middle-eastern heat; it was around noon when he rested by the well.

“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)

Think of a time you were really hot and thirsty. Remember the feeling of taking a cool drink of water; a pleasant buzz in your head that spreads slowly to the rest your body – your cells are coming back to life!

Water lubricates joints, carries oxygen to the brain and minerals to the organs. Water helps digest food, flushes away toxins, hydrates skin, and keeps us good-looking and cool, literally.

Water is EXACTLY what our bodies need. Each time you enjoy a drink of water, think of how much you exactly need Jesus.

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink …” – Jesus declared. (John 7:37)
