I would like to dedicate this to mothers who have suffered loss, mothers, godmothers, and grandmothers. This is your day! Mother’s Day is an occasion for everyone to express respect, honour, and love towards mothers. You play a significant role in the lives of your children and all who look to you as a mother figure.
My mother went home to be with the Lord about a year ago, on 19 May 2022. She was a simple, generous, and prayerful lady.
Two sons’ mention of mothers in the Bible:
1) Paul mentioned that the mother of his friend, Rufus, had been a mother to him as well. Romans 16:13 “Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.” it is likely that she had concern for Paul like his own mother and she might have done some things for him like any mother would do.
2) A mother who suffered much anguish and pain, seeing her son hung on the cross.
While in great pain and anguish, Jesus addressed His mother and said to her, “Woman, behold, your son!” (John 19:26) He called her “woman”, not “mother”, not out of any disrespect to her, but because “mother” would have been a cutting word to her who had been wounded to the heart with grief.
And to John, the disciple whom He loved, “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:27) that is, I commend her to your care, may you be as a son to her. Jesus touches me by tenderly providing for His mother at His death.
Let us pray for comfort for mothers who have suffered loss, wisdom for young mothers and all mothers, and acknowledge maternal bonds and the role of mothers in our society.
Blessed Mother’s Day!
